City of Angels
A little girl is taken away from her mummy by a man called Seth. Actually Seth is one of the angels in that city. Unlike those white shining angels in our imagination, they wear black suits, live in the library, and even have no wings. They just shoulder the responsibility of taking someone away in some way, as we all know, die. They are messengers of God.
Once in an operating room when Seth is taking a patient away, he makes an eye-contact with the doctor, Maggie. She looks right at him. Then he sees her crying and fighting with death. He stares at her closely all the time.
Seth comes into Maggie’s life because of a book. In the library, he touches Maggie’s hand by feeling. They talk a lot of tear, and they share many opinions about death. He finds himself gradually falling in love with Maggie, although they come from definitely two worlds. She is to help people to stay longer, while he is to take people away to another world.
With some hints Maggie realizes Seth is different: he doesn’t appear in a photo, he isn’t wounded while cut. The difference keeps him away from her. The one she really needs is that can be touched, rather than felt. So he decides to change himself. Seth knows no fear, no pain, and no hunger. He hears music in the sunrise with other angels. But he decides to give those all up on account of love for Maggie.
He lands on top of a skyscraper, and jumps. When he opens his eyes on the ground, he sees something red on his skin. That is blood. He gets the feeling of pain, and then he smiles, for he manages to become a human.
However, to be a human is not that easy. Man cannot fly; man relies on money and transportation. Seth goes through every trouble that one man can meet before he finally reaches Maggie. They hug and touch each other.
Maggie dies just then, even before she gets time to show Seth the world. The warmth is wonderful, but too short to be caught. He uses the free will to become a human, only to feel those emotions like pain, cold, and sorrow.
Just as the little girl’s confusion-what good would wings be if you couldn’t feel wind on your face? Maybe it is true life to die.
