Outstanding Afrio-American Man – Denzel Washington

Here, we tell another outstanding Afrio-American man – Denzel Washington. There have been very few actors over the past two decades who can claim to be as influential and respected as Denzel Washington. Sure, he’s won a humungous amount of awards for his work (two Academy Awards, three nominations and at least fifty other awards), makes millions of dollars, and is incredibly attractive to the opposite sex, but there’s a quality he possesses that is more import than any of these: integrity.

A devout Christian, Washington is well-known for not partaking in any of the usual shenanigans that Hollywood stars are partial to. He’s been happily married to his wife, Pauletta, since 1983 and has four children, the eldest of which is a professional American footballer. He is protective of his image – in a country that seemingly prizes celebrity above all else, Washington is an example of a popular figure whose public and private lives are kept distinctly separate.

Inevitably one of Hollywood’s A list actors, Denzel Washington could have easily enjoyed the privilege and counted days when he would gain another Oscar. However, like actors who had got so attached to their work, Washington was also addicted to the challenge of making movies rather than making profit and recognition out of them. Reflecting a dedicated spirit, it was understandable that he was indeed very serious from the very beginning.

In 1987, he started as anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko in Richard Attenborough’s Cry Freedom alongside Kevin Kline, and though the film itself alienated some critics, Washington’s powerful performance earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. Washington got his major role as Private Trip in Edward Zwick’s Civil War epic Glory in 1989. Washington’s inspiring performance as the bitter, passionate ex-slave earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and cemented him as one of the leading male actors in show business.

From here on in, the only way for Washington was straight up the Hollywood ladder. One of the critically acclaimed roles played by Denzel Washington was that of a Black Nationalist leader in the blockbuster movies “Malcolm X” (1992), for which he received a nomination for Oscar.
