Howl-Look Back the Beat Generation Poetically

Howl directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman is first released at the Berlin International Film Palace. The story is from the novel “howling” written by Allen Ginsberg as his famous work. It chronicled the well-known beat writer’s earlier spiritual and their emotional lives in the 1950s of The United States.

The film consists of three interrelated stories: the trial of prosecuting the crimes against obscenity of Allen Ginsberg in 1957; the representation of the dialogue of looking for love and redemption in the deviant way; explaining this masterpiece that once shook a generation of the United States through readings and fantasy. The three sections staggered interludes, full of scene representation and imagination, and sometimes re-joined the documentary image. The jumping expression is a bit chaotic due to intermittent, but it guides the audiences into Ginsberg’s inner world from the myth step by step because of the colorful chaos.

As there is not a strong story entrusted and it completely loaded Ginsberg’s spiritual world by the poems as well as the large section of the discussion to the literary value of “Howl” in court, it makes the general audiences who are not understand the “Beat Generation” of America society and literature difficult to closer to it. As a result, the director used a large of animation and music, exaggerated form of abstract, dark magic of color, sex, drugs, death of a nightmare of overlapping, which made the reading poem full of gloomy of the beat bold generation of the post-war U.S. Such an approach made people be record of reminiscent of psychedelic rock Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”. We must admit that vivid animation made the abstract literature visually, to some extent weakened and simplified the extension of literature. There is no doubt that it also increased appreciation and understanding of the film of the general audiences.

Thick-framed glasses, dark reading hut, spitting smoke ring, large glass of wine, with which the director reappear the sensitive deadlocked state of living of the 50s American by the delicate lens. James Franco who has played the “Batman” and “Milk” is very important in this film, because there is almost no female characters(except her boyfriend-Jack’s wife). Although his handsome appearance is far behind the real Ginsburg, he performed the inner sensitivities, loneliness and passion of a poet with a solid foundation of performance.

“Holy! Holy! This world divine! Soul divine! Skin divine! Nose divine! Tongue, hands and buttocks divine! Everything divine! All divine! Everyone divine! Around divine! Everyone eternity! Everyday eternity! Everyone is an angle!” The poet in the film calls sign out the spiritual subject of the Beat Generation at the party: freedom of speech, love and sex, equality of life and thought.

When mention the anti-traditional and anti-school pioneer Ginsburg, we can not help mention his gay identity. For this theme, the film expresses very pure, even the intimacy of him and his boyfriend seemed to bleach the sensual scenes and increased tenderness. “I felt accommodated completely by a person for the first time.” Friend and sustenance, communication, and inspired partners, his expecting for love is much better than this, but his object is not the opposite sex. His romance with Peter for 40 years is till death. The radical youth smile in the back with each other on the bench.
