Shutter Island-non competition on 2010 Berlinale-Scorsese “no Scorsese”
Shutter Island-non competition
–Director: Martin Scorsese
–The leading roles: Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams
Although it is the non-competition in finalist films, the Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese’s suspense thriller “Shutter Island” held on the February 13 at the Berlin premiere becomes the most exciting of the current events since the opening of the Berlin Film Festival. When asked that why he didn’t participate in the Golden Bear race, he jokingly asked in reply:”If I can’t get awars, then what to do?” Miss competition, Scorsese does not feel regret, “Do not play winning the prize, as long as you like the film.” Scorsese’s position, coupled with the popularity starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the Berlin International Film Palace is immersed in a Starchaser atmosphere.

“Shutter Island” is adapted from Dennis Le Haien’s suspense novel “Mystic River“. The story is set in the United States of 1950s. There a psychiatric on the island and it is specialize used to look up the schizophrenic felony prisoners. Leonardo DiCaprio plays a U.S Captain “Teddy” Edward Daniels and he goes to the island to investigate the myserious disappearance of a women prisoner. During the investigation, mysteries appear on by one…the shadow of World War II, his wife’s death, hard to forget the murderer, which all plagues Daniels. There is an astonishing secret hidden behind the island and even the identity of Daniels also gradually mystery. The island becomes a “The Castle” type existence in Kafka’s novel.
Directing suspense thriller for the first time, Scorsese hands over a not typical Scorsese work. Interestingly, on this year’s Berlin Film Festival, the two master director Scorsese and Polanski coincidentally bring suspense thriller, “Shutter Island” and “The Ghost Write“. What a mere coincidence, the two films are both set on a shutter island while the two films has emerged as the hero of a dubious state.
