Becoming Jane Austen

4210734208 4f0d73fc2f m Becoming Jane AustenJane Austen, known as a famous English female novelist, was the youngest daughter of Austen family. She was different from other girls at that time because she wanted to become a writer.

As she was old enough to get married, her mother was engaged in matchmaking for her. And a promising lawyer, Thomas Leroy, was chosen. His was born in a noble family, and marrying to him could bring great benefits to Austen family. However, Jane could not tolerate this arrogant Irishman after a bad first impression on him. Actually, she turned down the affections of numerous men, who stopped their court. But Tom was the exception. The two get to understand each other gradually, and eventually they fell in love.

Tom’s uncle and benefactor, Judge Lang Lois, knew that soon, and he invited them to London. He arranged this invitation to know something about Jane Austen before giving a blessing for their marriage. However, he received a letter informing him of the genteel poverty of Austen family. So he said “no” to their marriage, declaring that he would rather Tom to be the whoremonger he had been than allow him to live in poverty because of a bad marriage. Tom told Jane that he could not marry her, for a legitimate reason – he was the only hope of survival of his family.

Jane went back home sadly. She lived in great sorrow, until one day Tom returned to meet her. He told her that he could not live without Jane. So they decided to run away. With Jane’s sister, Cassandra’s help, they left home. Jane stumbled upon a letter from Tom’s mother, and realized his situation. She realized they couldn’t do that, not with that many people depending on him. Jane could not stand that, so she sacrificed herself. She knew Tom’s love for her, and that he would never give up her. That was enough. Finally, she stepped onto the carriage which would take her back home. The last glimpse Jane got of him was through the window with him walking after it for a bit, and then stopping.

Twenty years later, when Jane managed to make her name as a famous novelist, the two met each other again. It was at a social function. Jane was accompanied by her brother and her brother’s wife, and Tom was with his eldest daughter, whose name was also Jane. Little Jane was a fan of Jane Austen.
In her short life, Jane Austen wrote six of the greatest novels in the English language. Neither Jane nor her sister Cassandra ever married.
